Pull the plug on energy wastage

Monday, August 3, 2009

According to Tescocompare.com, this year’s holidaymakers could save £14 in energy usage by unplugging their electrical appliances prior to heading away for two weeks.

Debra Williams, spokesperson for Tescocompare.com said: "Although this isn't a massive amount, it is money which could easily be saved if electrical appliances were switched off at the source or unplugged altogether.  Most devices continue to use energy when left on standby, and can easily consume 10kWh per day – costing up to a £1 a day when the appliance is unused.  Those going on a traditional two-week break could be wasting an average of £14 whilst they are away."

Tescocompare.com has pointed out that turning off an electrical item at the switch does not necessarily disconnect it from the grid; some appliances will nevertheless draw a substantial level of electrical current until they are unplugged.  For this reason, the financial search engine has offered some ‘easy steps’ for a safe and energy-efficient home whilst on holiday.

  • Unplug the following devices before leaving the house: TVs, radios, DVD players, stereos, computers and all associated equipment.
  • Further appliances can also be completely switched off: microwave, dishwasher, electric boilers, and electric towel rails.  Some holidaymakers may also decide to empty their fridge / freezer and defrost it whilst they are away.  Regularly doing this is said to make it work more efficiently and reduce long-term energy usage.
  • Be sure to unplug any extension cords in addition to the actual appliance, otherwise energy will still be wasted.
  • If concerned about the cost of energy, alternative tariffs should be investigated.

Homeowners that would like to make their property more energy-efficient, but do not have the money required to carry out the desired work, could consider taking out a secured loan.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could allow the borrower to embark upon an array of projects.  For example, draughty doors, windows or roofs could be replaced for greater heat retention.  In addition, insulation could be improved, and solar panels introduced, to further reduce energy bills. Secured loans may also be considered by those individuals looking to carry out general home improvements or bigger space creating projects like extensions.
