According to Saga Motor Insurance, plummeting temperatures and the subsequent deterioration of driving conditions will cause serious concerns for 48 percent of UK motorists.
It was found that 39 percent are most fearful of driving in snow and ice, whilst 25 percent view heavy rain as a deterrent. Furthermore, findings show that 32 percent of all motorists prefer to avoid driving in foggy conditions, and 41 percent of those over 50 years of age are most concerned about this.
As the winter weather grips the nation, Saga Motor Insurance has discovered that 17 percent of motorists will utilise public transport or remain at home in order to avoid driving against the elements. It has also been revealed that women are more likely to reduce their mileage during the winter months than men, at 25 percent and 8 percent respectively. In addition, those over the age of 50 were found to be most likely to avoid driving in the dark, and 23 percent will change their driving behaviour to allow for this.
Executive Chairman of Saga Group Ltd, Andrew Goodsell, commented: "Older drivers are safer drivers, but in the winter their ability to adapt their driving to the conditions means that they are even less likely than at other times of the year to have an accident than younger more care free motorists. We urge all drivers to check the weather forecast before they venture out, and if they're at all worried, to use alternative means of transport."
Saga Motor Insurance is warning motorists to be extremely cautious when driving in dangerous weather conditions. Prior to a journey in snow and ice, motorists have been advised to act as follows: ensure that all windows are clear; utilise second gear for pulling away and be gentle with the clutch to minimise the chance of wheel spin; drive at a considerable distance from the car in front as it takes ten times longer to stop in snowy and icy conditions; and brake and accelerate gently to avoid skidding.

As the winter weather truly sets in, homeowners who are finding their house a little chilly – perhaps due to an ineffective central heating system – could consider taking out a secured loan to make some
home improvements. One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could pave the way to that much-desired warm and welcoming property. In addition to a new and improved central heating system, draughty doors and windows could become a thing of the past by replacing them with modern counterparts. Borrowers could even re-decorate their home at the same time in order to create their dream property.
