Dangers of second-hand child car seats

Sainsbury’s Car Insurance is advising parents against purchasing second-hand child cars seats to avoid any uncertainty surrounding whether or not they have previously been damaged in an accident.

According to research, approximately 14 percent of the child seats that are currently in use were received from a friend or relative, or even bought second-hand.  However, it would seem that 5 percent may need to be replaced due to damage caused amid an accident or minor bump.  With regard to second-hand purchases, an Ebay analysis revealed that 131 “used” child car seats are on sale on the online auction site.

Sainsbury's Car Insurance Manager, Lucy Hunter, commented:  "If a child car seat has already been involved in an accident, it's extremely difficult to know if it is still functioning properly and that it doesn't have any hidden faults.  This means that if you already know that the seat has prevented a child from being injured or if you have bought it second hand and therefore can't be sure of its history, you could be strapping your child into a seat that provides little or no protection.

"Even if a child car seat is a present from friends or family, as is the case with around 669,000 (13 per cent) child car seats, unless they are brand new as opposed to hand-me-downs, you cannot be 100 per cent sure of their safety."

As well as advising parents to opt for brand new child car seats, Sainsbury’s Car Insurance is also stressing the importance of ensuring that car seats are appropriate for the cars in question.  In addition, car seats should be fitted correctly, unlike the two-thirds that Sainsbury’s Car Insurance noted.

Homeowners with children, who are not satisfied with the safety level of their current vehicle and are therefore looking to replace it with an improved model, could consider taking out a secured loan to make this possible.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan could allow the borrower to purchase a car that is ideal for their family’s requirements.  In addition, when taking out a secured loan, new child car seats could be purchased for added peace of mind.
