According to the Met Office, their provisional climate figures indicate that April 2011 was the ‘warmest on record’. In fact, several areas of the UK reportedly experienced temperatures that were 3 to 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal. The average temperature was found to be 10.7 degrees Celsius – compared to 10.2 degrees Celsius in April 2007, which was the previous warmest April on record.
Furthermore, it has been revealed that the month was also the eleventh driest April in the UK since records began over a century ago, in 1910. Figures show that the UK average rainfall total was 36.7mm in April 2011, which reportedly represents 52 percent of the long-term average for the entire month.
However, the Met Office has highlighted the fact that ‘rainfall amounts have varied quite widely across the UK’. For example, 110 percent of normal April rainfall was recorded in parts of North and West Scotland, whereas less than 10 percent was recorded in parts of South and East England.
It is believed that ‘blocked weather patterns’ across the UK were the principal reason behind the dry weather experienced in April. According to the Met Office, ‘this weather pattern has prevented the usual run of westerly winds off the Atlantic Ocean, which bring rain bearing fronts’.

Homeowners who have been unable to take full advantage of the recent warm weather because of unruly, overgrown gardens could consider taking out a
secured loan to finance a landscaping project. One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could allow borrowers to transform their outdoor space into the ideal spot for relaxing or socialising in the summer sunshine. Borrowers could even invest in a conservatory if desired, so that they can enjoy their garden all year round – come rain or shine.
