According to RICS, an increased amount of green space in towns and cities could reduce the impact of urban climate change by as much as 2.5 degrees Celsius.
RICS has highlighted the fact that temperatures in urban areas are presently up to 6 degrees Celsius higher than in rural areas, and it is felt that ‘more should be done to alleviate this growing problem’.
By the year 2050, UK summer temperatures may be up to 3.5 degrees Celsius higher – with urban areas ‘particularly susceptible’ – according to current climate change predictions. However, RICS believes that the impact of the ‘urban heat island effect’ could be reduced ‘by sustainably increasing the amount of green space and planting vegetation on roofs and walls in urban areas’.
It has been reported that green space in urban areas is being increasingly eroded due to the construction of roads and new development. Maximum temperatures could reportedly rise by as much as 7 degrees Celsius by removing just 10 percent of green space from a built-up area. Therefore, RICS would to see existing green spaces safeguarded.

Homeowners in urban or rural areas, who have gardens that require a lot of work, could consider taking out a secured loan to fund a landscaping project. One of many finance options available, a
secured loan for home improvements could pave the way to the perfect outdoor space in which to enjoy the summer months. Borrowers who would like a little privacy from close-by neighbours could even organise for extra, appropriate vegetation to be cleverly planted along the dividing line.
