UK Climate Change Act 2008

According to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the UK Climate Change Act 2008 outlines ‘some of the world’s most aggressive national targets’.

In fact, the Act looks to achieve an 80 percent reduction in the level of greenhouse gas emissions recorded in 1990 by the year 2050.

A CDP report assesses how the emission reduction aims of UK FTSE 100 companies compare to the national target.  The CDP dataset from 2009 has been used as a basis for determining how ambitious the company carbon reduction goals are.  Findings show that the average annual greenhouse gas emission reduction rate target for FTSE 100 companies stands at 2.5 percent, with a 2.4 percent rate required to hit the 2020 target set out in the UK Climate Change Act. However, 87 percent of all FTSE 100 emissions are reportedly down to just 24 companies, which include the Energy, Utilities and Materials sectors.  With their annual average reduction rate at just 1.2 percent, it would seem that the Government’s requirements for 2020 will not be met until 2030.

CEO of CDP, Paul Dickinson, commented: "It is crucial that those sectors responsible for nearly 90% of FTSE 100 reported emissions set aggressive reduction targets.  Although we see some individual companies setting strong targets, the sector average reduction targets for Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors are lagging behind what is required to meet UK government targets."

home-improvement-loansHomeowners who are keen to do their part for the environment whilst in turn potentially reducing their energy bills, could consider taking out a secured loan to embark upon any desired home improvement projects.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could allow borrowers to fully insulate their property in order to avoid wasting as much heat as possible.  Any windows that are not double-glazed could also be replaced, along with any poorly fitted doors that may be causing a draught.  Furthermore, some borrowers may wish to utilise the sun’s natural resources by investing in solar panels.
