Home Improvements
As the country braces itself for arctic temperatures, MORE TH>N insurance is warning that thousands of small businesses and homes are at risk of ‘significant damage’ due to burst water tanks and pipes. Vacant properties are reportedly most susceptible to burst pipes.
Therefore, MORE TH>N has offered the following preventative advice:
- Maintain the central heating at a minimum temperature of ten to twelve degrees.
- To prevent the cold water tank from freezing, remove a piece of loft insulation directly below it so that heat can penetrate the ceiling. Furthermore, when leaving the property vacant, open the loft hatch to allow heat to circulate.
- Ensure that your pipes are insulated.
- Programme the heating to come on for a short period of time every day in order to keep the water circulating if you are going away for a few days.
- If you are going away for a longer period then consider turning the water off at the stopcock and draining the system.
- Ensure that your insurance documents are safely stored and that you can easily locate them in the event of an emergency.

Homeowners who are finding that their property is particularly chilly this winter could consider taking out a secured loan to transform it into a warm and cosy home. One of many finance options available, a
secured loan could be used to thoroughly insulate the property for example. Furthermore, an inefficient heating system could be replaced with a modern counterpart. Any ill-fitting doors and windows could also be replaced to prevent draughts, and to assist with heat retention. Following such work, borrowers may even wish to redecorate and refurbish their home to make it all the more inviting.
