In research conducted prior to the last bank holiday, LV= reported that ‘Staycations’ – trips away within the UK - were planned by almost seven million UK adults.

Bank Holiday ‘Staycations’ were reported as being set to boost the economy by £1.1 billion with Scotland and London being the most popular destinations to visit.  LV=’s research revealed that twice the number of people planning to go abroad actually intended to take a long Bank Holiday weekend away within the UK. The average anticipated spend was £170 per person.

A quarter of ‘staycationers’ planned to visit family or friends, while 12% said that they would stay at a B&B. Camping and caravanning both appealed to 12% of respondents whilst 10% said they would opt for a three star hotel. Less than 4% said that they would stay at a luxury hotel.  John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= travel insurance, commented: "These results show that the continuing recession is having a direct impact on people's holiday related decisions. The general climate of watching the pennies has not only increased the number of people staying here in the UK but also has impacted on the types of breaks people are taking with cheaper holidays such as camping seeing a rise in popularity."

LV=’s research also revealed that 15% of those surveyed had already had their main holiday this year – in Great Britain. An additional 27% had taken a short break in the countryside. 39% had not yet taken a holiday when the research was conducted. 9% of those who had ‘staycationed’ said that they were inspired to take more UK holidays in the future. The top bank holiday destination was reported as being Scotland, where 11% of UK holidaymakers intended a visit.
