According to new research by Santander Insurance, 25 percent of Brits are concerned about adverse weather conditions damaging their property.

With Siberian winds and snow currently hitting the country, and predictions that the ‘big freeze’ will last for several weeks, it has been revealed that 37 percent of survey respondents also have concerns about the affordability of their lighting and heating bills this winter.

Furthermore, findings have shown that 22 percent are worried about the possibility of injuring themselves in an accident.  A further 22 percent are reportedly afraid of being injured in a driving accident, whilst 15 percent are more anxious about their children making their way home in the evenings.  The research has uncovered that in total, 76 percent of respondents have greater concerns about their home and personal security during the winter.

Santander Insurance has offered the following advice regarding storms, snow and floods:

  • Store all insurance documents, and other important paperwork, in a water tight container.
  • As evidence for insurance claims, maintain a photographic record of all valuable possessions.
  • Ensure that you have a copy of your insurance hotline telephone number in case of an emergency.
  • Be prepared for a power cut by keeping a torch in a place that is easily accessible.
  • Ensure that you are aware of where and how to turn off your electricity and water supply.
  • List your essential telephone numbers somewhere separate to your mobile phone in case you are unable to access it.
  • Let close friends and family know that you are safe but that you might need help in the days to come.

Homeowners who concerned that their property is not equipped to withstand the elements, or secure enough to deter prospective thieves, could consider taking out a secured loan to rectify any problem areas.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan could allow borrowers to embark upon an array of projects in and around their home.  For example, any weak or poorly fitting doors and windows could be replaced with modern counterparts that are both draught-free and secure.  A secured loan could pave the way to that all-important peace of mind.
