Research conducted by Halifax has revealed some interesting statistics with regards to population movements throughout the UK during the course of the past decade.
Martin Ellis, Halifax chief economist, commented: "There have been significant population movements across the UK over the past ten years. Regions in southern England saw the largest gain from internal migration with the South East proving the most popular region for people to move to from elsewhere in the UK."
The first of the key findings from Halifax revealed that the South East has seen the most significant net gain from internal migration over the past ten years. This was established by deducting emigration from immigration between the years 1998 and 2007. During this period 550,889 more people moved to the South East than left. This represents seven percent more than the South West at 514,511 – the second highest net gain from internal migration.
On the opposite end of the scale came London, with the only recorded net loss from internal migration at -344,558. However, this loss was more than counterbalanced by the arrival of practically two million people from abroad since 1998. This resulted in the highest level of net international migration, with 1.8 million more people moving to London than leaving it. In contrast, the North East and North West saw an overall population decline at -26,000 and -27,000 respectively.
Over the past decade, six of the twelve UK regions received at least one million people via internal migration, though it would seem that since 1998 the most popular region has been the South East. In excess of 2.2 million people descended on the area between 1998 and 2007, in contrast to the 1.6 million people that migrated to London from other UK regions.
In terms of the number of people that moved away from London to alternative UK pastures, this stood at virtually two million between 1998 and 2007. This was the biggest volume to have left a particular UK region for another, and contributed to the aforementioned net loss.
When it comes to levels of UK-based emigration, the South East came second to London at 1.7 million, followed by the East of England at 1 million. Eight of the twelve UK regions experienced a level of internal emigration in excess of 750,000 people. The lowest levels were recorded in Northern Ireland at 95,551 and the North East at 335,280.

Homeowners that have moved and who would like to complete those much-needed
home improvements due may wish to consider secured loan. One of many options for finance, a secured loan can be repaid over a term to suit the borrower from 5 to 25 years, and could be the solution for those wanting to make their new home their castle. A secured loan to make home improvements may also be just the alternative to upping sticks and moving. If space for a growing family is what’s needed, a secured loan can provide the funds needed to complete a loft or basement conversion. As well as converting upwards and downwards, a secured loan may also be put to good use by extending outwards with an extension or conservatory.
