According to Halifax Home Insurance, approximately 3.5 million people living in rural areas are failing to make life difficult for burglars by ‘leaving their doors unlocked most days’.
In contrast, this was only found to be the case for one in ten people living in urban areas. Furthermore, it has been reported that in excess of 8 million country-dwellers do not use a burglar alarm; with 11 percent citing that they ‘don’t see the point’.
The reason behind rural residents not taking steps to protect their property has been related to their ‘trusting nature’. It was found that 56 percent trust their friends or neighbours to check on their home whilst they are away, whereas this figure stands at just 43 percent in urban areas.
However, findings have shown that 13 percent of rural residents have fallen victim to crime during the past 12 months. Two of the most common incidents were revealed to be vandalism at 39 percent and burglary at 13 percent.
Despite the fact that crime in rural areas is increasing by twice as much as it is in urban areas, Halifax Home Insurance points out that awareness remains low in the countryside. This is evidenced by the discovery that 33 percent of rural inhabitants feel that it is ‘unlikely that they’ll be burgled’.

Homeowners who would like to increase the level of security in and around their property could consider taking out a secured loan to fund any work required. One of many finance options available, a secured loan for
home improvements could allow the borrower to invest in a range of deterrents such as burglar alarms, closed circuit television, and external lighting. Furthermore, borrowers may also wish to replace any weak doors or windows with stronger counterparts.
