According to a survey conducted by YouGov for M&S Money, 64 percent of British adults are more likely to tackle jobs themselves as opposed to hiring skilled tradesmen.

However, figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents show that over 200,000 people visit hospital each year with DIY related injuries.  As a result, M&S Money is advising ‘DIY enthusiasts’ to mull over whether they have the skills required for the job before commencing it.  This group are also being advised to establish whether they have accidental damage insurance cover in place ahead of getting a project underway.

M&S Head of General Insurance, Andrew Ferguson, commented: "Spring is one of the most popular times of year to kick start all those DIY jobs that have been accumulating over the winter months.  But even simple painting projects don't always go to plan.  Our research shows that a fifth of DIY Dads admit that they have spilled paint on carpets and flooring while decorating at home.

"We would urge people to check their home insurance policy covers them for accidental damage and whether there is a limit to this cover.  M&S Premier Home Insurance includes unlimited accidental damage cover for the home and contents.

"If people are attempting more complex DIY projects at home that should really be carried out by professionals; they are risking much more serious consequences than having to replace ruined carpeting."

M&S Money have offered some ‘simple steps’ to reducing the risk of home emergencies during ‘DIY season’:

  • Do not tackle any work involving electrical wiring or gas installations; as such jobs should only be carried out by qualified persons.
  • Store all products in their original containers and ensure that all paints and chemicals remain out of reach of children.
  • To avoid damage from spillages, cover carpets and rugs.
  • Wear clothing that is appropriate to the task at hand – for example, hard-wearing shoes and eye masks.
  • Keep tools clean and in good condition.
  • Ensure that another person is on hand to provide support when ladders are being used.
  • Do not use electrical items in damp weather.

Homeowners who are keen to improve their property, but do not have the necessary funds to hand, could consider taking out a secured loan to facilitate any work required – or simply desired.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could pave the way to that ideal home.  For example, homeowners who have been dreaming of extra living space could call in the professionals to add an extension or conservatory to their property.  A secured loan could also be used to completely re-decorate and re-furbish a home to reflect personal tastes and lifestyles.
