According to new research by esure car insurance, 54 percent of Brits are intending to make journeys this Bank Holiday weekend, which could mean them facing travel chaos.

In fact, with 33 percent of respondents revealing their plans to cover more miles and greater distances than during the preceding Bank Holiday weekend, delays could be worse than before.

Esure has estimated that over 10.6 million travellers will encounter such delays this Bank Holiday weekend.  Average time periods are predicted to be in excess of 50 minutes for 8.6 million motorists, and approximately 57 minutes for over 1.6 million train travellers.  In addition, more than 400,000 of those travelling by plane could be subject to an average delay of 52 minutes.

With regard to road congestion, the research indicated that this is most likely to occur in areas surrounding shopping centres and retail parks.  The former is the planned destination for 30 percent of those that are intending to travel this weekend.  Following suit are garden centres at 28 percent, the beach at 26 percent, DIY stores at 23 percent, and historical venues at 12 percent.

In terms of how motorists are intending to tackle Bank Holiday traffic, 18 percent will be making their journeys at night, and 66 percent will be making early or late starts to avoid peak times.  A further 48 percent will avoid A roads and motorways, while 19 percent will use Satellite Navigation Systems to completely avoid motorways.  13 percent of the respondents who experienced delays during the last Bank Holiday weekend have been entirely deterred from travelling, and 10 percent have cancelled or altered plans to cut down on travel times.

The challenging economic conditions have also had an impact on plans, with 15 percent of those polled admitting that they will be staying at home in a bid to make savings.  Of these, 24 percent shall be enjoying ‘quiet time’, while 5 percent shall be embarking upon household projects.

Head of Risk and Underwriting at esure, Mike Pickard, commented: "Travel delays are commonplace on Bank Holiday weekends as Brits hit the roads, airports and train stations on mass to make their getaway.  But one of the worst places to spend a three day long weekend break is in a traffic jam where there's no escape.
"Planning ahead, travelling off-peak and choosing a route that avoids roads surrounding places of interest, shopping malls and seaside resorts are good ways to beat the queues.  Doing a thorough vehicle check before setting off is also advisable to try to prevent a breakdown and stocking up on water, snacks and a map is a must in case there are unavoidable delays."

Those that choose to stay at home this Bank Holiday weekend, perhaps dreaming of that ideal living space, may wish to consider taking out a home improvement loan to make that dream a reality.  A home improvement loan could allow the borrower to undertake an array of projects such as replacing tired kitchens or bathrooms with brand new models, or landscaping gardens to achieve that perfect area for summer barbeques.  Some homeowners may even wish to extend their property with a conservatory or extension funded by their home improvement loan. A home improvement loan is one of many options to fund home improvements.
