According to the latest figures published in the Quarterly Update, which are based on British Crime Survey (BCS) interviews in the twelve months to December 2009, there was a 7 percent reduction in BCS crime compared to the year before.

There was reportedly a 9 percent reduction in the level of BCS household crime, whilst the level of BCS personal crime was described as stable.

An annual comparison between this year and last, revealed that the overall risk of being a victim of crime has fallen from 23 percent to 22 percent. On a quarterly basis, it has been reported that the risk of being a victim of crime currently stands at a similar level to the last two updates – the lowest since the survey commenced in 1981.

The reason for the reduction in BCS household crime was described as being down to ‘statistically significant falls’ in the following areas: vandalism at 12 percent; burglary at 12 percent; and vehicle related theft at 11 percent.  Other BCS household crime levels, such as bicycle theft, reportedly remained stable.

With regard to police recorded crime, falls were noted across all crime types aside from sexual offences, which increased by 2 percent.  The most substantial reductions included offences against vehicles at 16 percent and criminal damage at 11 percent.  A 3 percent reduction was also noted in domestic burglary, and other burglaries at 6 percent.

Homeowners who would like to increase the level of security in and around their property could consider taking out a secured loan to fund the required work.  One of many finance options available, a secured loan for home improvements could allow borrowers to invest in state of the art alarm systems, closed circuit television, sturdy locks, and external lighting for example.  There is a vast array of such measures, which can significantly minimise the likelihood of becoming a victim of household crime – enabling borrowers to enjoy peace of mind.
