Personal Finance Tips
Following Scottish Power’s announcement that they will be increasing gas prices by 19 percent and increasing electricity prices by 10 percent, Confused.com has offered consumers some energy conserving tips.
- Compare tariffs and switch to the cheapest option on the market, which could save you approximately 19 percent.
- Make payments by direct debit, which could save you approximately 9 percent.
- Install cavity wall insulation, which costs £100 but could save you £110 annually.
- Insulate your loft for about the same price, which could save you an estimated sum of £145.
- Get an energy monitor, which will show you your energy usage in real time and also historical records. By keeping an eye on the monitor, it is estimated that you could shave 12 percent off your energy bill.
- When purchasing white goods, check the energy efficiency ratings. Also, try to use a tumble dryer with an A rating or dry your clothes on a washing line.
- Before turning on your dishwasher, fill it up rather than using it to wash a couple of dishes at a time.
- To help you make your home more energy efficient, grants and schemes are available.
- Turn appliances off properly rather than leaving them on standby. This could lead to a significant saving, as well as a reduction in carbon emissions.
- Ensure that mobile phone chargers and other power supplies are switched off at the mains to avoid wasting energy.
- Switch off the light when the last person leaves a room, and switch to energy-efficient bulbs.
- Avoid having big gaps of open space inside your fridge or freezer as this will cause it to use more energy. Either keep your fridge / freezer well stocked or fill empty spaces with carrier bags filled with newspaper.
- Avoid boiling more water than you require, as heating water is comparatively expensive.
- Some people could save money by having a water meter installed so that they are only charged for what they use.
- Always wash a full load, and reduce the temperature at which you do your wash.
- Turn your thermostat down a degree or adjust your timer so that the heating only comes on when necessary.

Homeowners who would like to make their property more energy efficient, but do not have the money required, could consider taking out a secured loan. One of many finance options available, a
secured loan for home improvements could allow borrowers to embark upon an array of projects in and around their property. For example, any old, ill-fitting doors or windows could be replaced with modern, well-fitted counterparts to eradicate draughts. Furthermore, the property could be fully insulated to assist with heat retention.
