Boiler Scrappage Scheme set to reduce both carbon and heating bills

According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, up to 125,000 households with ‘G-rated’ boilers in England can now apply through the Energy Savings Trust for a voucher that will entitle them to a £400 discount on a new ‘A-rated boiler.

It would seem that the discount also applies to renewable heating systems such as biomass boilers and heat pumps.

The Government's Boiler Scrappage Scheme will reportedly cut carbon by 140,000t per year, which is equivalent to reducing the number of cars on the road by 45,000.  Furthermore, the scheme will reduce expenditure on fuel, with a possible £200 to £235 reduction in household energy bills each year.  The scheme is also set to sustain employment for the heating industry.  In fact, it has been reported that the scheme will sustain work for 130,000 installers and more than 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers.

Ed Miliband, Climate Change Secretary, commented: "The Boiler Scrappage Scheme will save around £200 off heating bills per year for families that are replacing their old boilers, and in total will save the same amount of carbon equivalent to taking around 45,000 cars off the road.

"The Scheme will add to the existing package of Government measures to help householders be smarter about the energy they use, leading to permanently reduced fuel bills and cutting emissions."

Chief Operating Officer at Energy Saving Trust, Fraser Winterbottom, commented: "We know that people will act on larger energy efficiency measures like replacing boilers when they are both good for the environment and cost effective for them.  They also need to be able to trust the claims that are made around energy efficiency measures.  The Energy Saving Trust is impartial, can provide this assurance, and can provide information to help people assess whether their boilers are eligible.  If you have access to the internet you can go on line to check whether your boiler is G rated or if you prefer, our expert nationwide advice centre staff are also available to advise you over the phone. We are here to help."

Homeowners who are looking to further reduce their energy bills could consider taking out a secured loan to facilitate a range of energy-saving projects within their property.  For example, a secured loan – which is one of many finance options available – could allow borrowers to replace any draughty doors or windows to reduce heat loss.  Additionally, a roof that is in a state of disrepair could also be replaced to further aide heat retention.  Borrowers could even consider investing in solar panels to make the most of natural resources.
