Home Improvements
According to new research from esure home insurance, which involved 3,000 homeowners, the average life of a sofa is 8 years.
During this time, it will reportedly seat up to 782 visitors and be slept on by 489 visitors. Findings also indicate that the average sofa will be jumped on 587 times by children over the course of the 8 years.
The research also revealed that the average sofa will be sat on during 1,271 soap operas and 782 films throughout its 8 years. In addition, homeowners will sit on it whilst eating 13 ‘TV dinners’ each month. It is thought that the average amount of time that residents will spend on their sofa is 4 hours a day.
Esure found that the average sofa is regularly exposed to spillages, with wine being spilt on it fortnightly. Tea and coffee spillages are even more common at 3 times per week. Furthermore, there will be 3 instances of children dropping their food and drink on the sofa every fortnight, and 6 instances of parents spilling some of their food on the sofa 6 times a month. However, despite the total number of spillages standing at 1,663 during the lifetime of the sofa, 87 percent of respondents would not consider getting it cleaned or re-covered.
Head of home insurance at esure, Mike Pickard, commented: "If the nation's sofas could speak they would certainly have a lot of tales to tell. Being central to family life and home entertaining, it's not surprising that the average sofa needs to be hardwearing to handle the daily wear and tear of playful kids, TV dinners and doubling up as a piece of bedroom furniture.
"With the staggering number of food and drink spillages the average sofa has to endure over its lifetime and the sheer volume of visitors, it's crucial for homeowners to have accidental damage cover in case a disaster strikes that writes-off the best seat in the house."

Homeowners who would like to redecorate and refurnish their home after years of spillages and general wear and tear, could consider taking out a secured loan for home improvements. One of many finance options available, a secured loan for
home improvements could allow the borrower to embark upon an array of projects around the home. For example, damaged or worn carpets could be replaced throughout the property. Borrowers whose visitors do not have any option but to sleep on the sofa, could even consider extending their property in order to create a useful spare bedroom. Alternatively, an unused room or attic space could be converted for this purpose.
