According to a ‘bike snatch experiment’ conducted by MORE TH>N, Liverpool is the most trustworthy city.
This conclusion was reached when a new bike was left unattended in the city centre for virtually four hours before it was stolen. In contrast, a bicycle was taken after just 17 minutes when left in the city of London. The national average stands at two hours and 22 minutes.
MORE TH>N points out that the annual number of bicycles to be unlawfully taken from UK streets has increased to an estimated 300,000. This is the equivalent to one bike every 105 seconds.
With the recession leaving commuters seeking lower transport costs, bicycle sales are now recorded to stand at 22.6 percent higher than last year. Furthermore, it has been revealed that only 5 percent of stolen bicycles ever make it back into the possession of their actual owners. Based on an average bicycle costing £218, thieves are resulting in a nationwide expense of over £62 million a year.
Marketing Director for MORE TH>N, Peter Markey, commented: "The experiment was designed to raise awareness about the growing problem of bike theft and also to help us identify cities where there is a particularly high risk. Naturally we don't recommend anyone leave their bike unsecured and the experiment proves that, no matter where you live, without proper security it's just a matter of time until your bike is snatched. To help reduce the chances of bike theft MORE TH>N has prepared its top tips for better bike security. Whether you already have a bike or are planning to invest, make sure you have the right cover in place should the unfortunate happen."

Homeowners who are concerned not only about the safety of their bicycles, but the security of their home in general, could consider taking out a
secured loan to increase the level of security in and around their property. For example, a secured loan could be used to change existing windows and doors with UPVC replacements. Additional security measures such as installing CCTV and improving perimeter walls around homes could be funded with a secured loan. A secured loan is one of many options to fund home improvements.
