According to new research from Allianz Insurance, 61 percent of Brits believe that in the next two years burglary levels will increase. With 60 percent reportedly feeling that their homes are not entirely secure, households are being urged to become more security conscious.
Findings have shown that at night, 19 percent of households do not feel completely secure in their homes. Furthermore, it was found that 43 percent keep an object close at hand in case they need a weapon to protect themselves and their property against burglars. It has been revealed that the top five ‘potential weapons’ include: a kitchen knife at 12 percent; a baseball bat at 11 percent; a frying pan at 8 percent; a heavy torch at 7 percent; and scissors at 7 percent.
Allianz Insurance has pointed out that there is ‘a distinct gap between how much people fear being burgled and the measures they put into place to protect their homes’. The following security tips have been offered to lessen the risk of burglary:
- Ensure that deadlocks are installed on external doors.
- Leave a light on in a main room of the property if you go out in the evening.
- Don’t leave ladders or tools lying around, which would appeal to an opportunist thief.
- When garages, sheds and other outbuildings are not in use, ensure that they are closed and locked.
- Unless strangers show you official proof of their identity, which you can verify, do not let them into your home.
- Prior to going away on holiday, cancel milk and newspaper deliveries.
- Retain a record of your possessions, such as the serial numbers of TVs and DVD players. Also take photographs of unusual or valuable belongings.

Homeowners who would like to put additional security measures in place to protect their properties could consider taking out a secured homeowner loan. One of many finance options available,
secured homeowner loans could allow borrowers to embark upon an array of projects in and around their home to help them achieve peace of mind. For example, secured homeowner loans could be used to pay for extra locks, external lighting, a gravel driveway, a state of the art burglar alarm, and even closed-circuit television if desired.
