At Nemo Personal Finance we believe in giving something back to the community we live and work in. As a company we get involved in varying programmes which span across the UK, but a lot of our focus is on activities and charities local to our business.
Nemo’s commitment to fundraising
As a company we get involved in varying programmes which span across the UK, but a lot of our focus is on activities and charities local to our business. Everyone who works at Nemo has the chance to vote for the annual charity we support.
In 2012 we are supporting Velindre Cancer Centre after it received the most votes. The charity, which is the largest non-surgical cancer Hospital in Wales, needs money for a large range of things all designed so that they can continue the best possible care and support to cancer patients and their families.
In the past we have supported the following charities:
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation which seeks to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications; and is the world's leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. JDRF was founded by a small group of parents of children with type 1 diabetes who recognised that insulin injections were not the cure for this life threatening and lifelong condition. Nemo Loans raised over £6,500 for JDRF when it was their charity of the year in 2011.
Wales Air Ambulance, an all Wales charity providing a vital service through emergency air cover for those who face life-threatening illnesses or injuries. WAA relies on public support to keep them flying and does not receive direct funding from the government; nor do they qualify for National Lottery Funding. WAA was the charity of the year for Nemo Loans in 2010 when over £3,000 was raised.
SCBU, the Special Care Baby Unit at Heath Hospital in Cardiff, which was set up by staff and parents who had babies at the Neonatal Unit at the University Hospital Wales, part of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. 2009 saw SCBU as charity of the year at Nemo Loans and over £4,000 was raised by employees.
Tŷ Hafan, a Cardiff children’s charity, offers comfort, care and support for life-limited children and young people and is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the whole family. Established in 1999, Tŷ Hafan has helped over 400 families who live with the reality that their children with life-limiting conditions may not reach the age of 19. Nemo Loans employees voted Tŷ Hafan as their charity of the year in 2008 and over £3,000 was raised.
One of the original charities supported by Nemo Loans was Cancer Research Wales. Cancer Research Wales has raised many millions of pounds for research into the treatment and diagnosis of cancer which has benefitted people in Wales and all over the world. Based in Cardiff, Cancer Research Wales is an all Wales charity; where over 90p in the pound goes directly into cancer research.
Since Nemo launched for business, we’ve raised over £24,500 for the various charities we’ve supported over the years and we hope 2012 will be just as successful for Velindre Cancer Care.
We also arrange one-off activities to help other local charities, like Huggard, a charity who care for the homeless, where we arranged for our staff to bring in any clothes they wanted to re-cycle which could be used by the charity.
